Biography

David Convery has over 19 years experience in the auction world. He was an Associate Director of Christie’s and managed the highly successful Sporting Memorabilia Department at Christie’s South Kensington. As Head of the Department he was involved with the Private Treaty sale of The Bobby Moore Collection to West Ham United (July 2000) and the sale of the collection of Sir Geoff Hurst, which set a then world auction record of £91,750 (September 2000) for Sir Geoff's shirt worn during the 1966 World Cup final game. In March 2002 this world record price was eclipsed by the sale of the 1970 World Cup final shirt worn by Pele, the shirt fetched £157,750.

Other world auction record prices achieved under David’s charge include Alan Ball’s 1966 World Cup Winners Medal which sold for £164,800 and his 1966 World Cup Cap which sold for £43,200 and the 1888 F.A. Cup Final ball which sold for £45,000. One of the many highlights from David’s Christie’s career was selling the Football Association Challenge Cup (1896 - 1910) which sold for a world auction record price of £478,000, the highest price for a piece of football memorabilia sold at auction.

Other pre-eminent football related property sold recently includes the single-owner collections of Sir Alf Ramsey, Tommy Taylor, Phil Neal, Ray Wilson, Bobby Murdoch and Jimmy Delaney. Other successful sporting sales include the Agar and Guy Curry Cricket Libraries and the Mark Railing Real Tennis Library.
